Recipe: Bacon Jam
Fall is almost here and all we can’t stop thinking about bacon jam! Add this amazing condiment to cheese boards and toasted sandwiches or enjoy with vegetables like green beans or roasted beets. Bonus tip - get serious brownie points and give it as a gift!
This recipe has only a handful of ingredients and comes together in a snap. The hardest part is not eating all the bacon before it’s turned into jam!
Bacon Jam
Yields: 1 ½ cups
Ingredients
1 lb. Sunday Bacon
1 large sweet onion, diced
½ tsp mustard seeds
Splash of bourbon (approximately 1 Tbsp, optional)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup water
½ tsp chili flakes
Pinch of salt and pepper to taste (optional)
1 Tbsp Balsamic Vinegar
Method
Cut bacon into rough ½ inch pieces and cook in heavy bottomed pot over medium heat just until bacon is getting crispy.
Remove bacon from pot and all but approximately 2 Tablespoons of the rendered bacon fat (reserve bacon fat for another use).
Add mustard seeds to oil and toast for a 10 to 15 seconds then add onions. Sautee onions until translucent and slightly browned, about 10 minutes.
Stir in bourbon, brown sugar, chili flakes, bacon and water and cook on medium low heat until a rich brown color, about 25 to 30 minutes. Finish with balsamic vinegar.
Store in fridge for up to 1 week.
Enjoy!
